ExecuteSQL and Value List

Has anyone created a dynamic value list using ExecuteSQL? I tried a Virtual List, but of course, the displayField is an unstored calculation so it will not work for a value list. I changed the VL::displayField to an autoEnter calc (same calculation definition) in order to have the data indexed, but alas, the field doesn't populate, even after refreshing/flushing (which I would want to avoid anyway).

It is so easy to get the values with ExecuteSQL - I'm just having a difficult time figuring out how to make a value list with the results.

Thanks.
