I covered this technique in my second Filemaker Advisor article on Virtual Lists in 2009; as well as at Pause On Error/London.
Did you use SQL (plugin back then)?
That's the part I see so much possibility with (the new ExecuteSQL function in FM12).

No. I didn't use SQL to gather the list; and that is a great method of building the list that becomes the unstored side of the calc.
The use of CONSTANTS (inside the SQL query) is another PLUS for trimming those calculated and/or global fields down.
Kevin mentions doing the magic value lists without the SQL. Bruce do you have a whitepaper/presentation/blog/example for that method? I love the virtual list, so there must be something for cascading value lists.
