You may have your field validation set to "strict" -- not allowing a user to over-ride the date format -- which makes it hard to accept the "..." portion as well as the dual-date entry for the search range.
I tend to set validation on dates loosely so that as long as a date is entered, it is accepted, then users usually don't get warnings with date range searches.
Check your field validations, and see if they are overly restrictive. I have not tested the effect of metric date formats, as it's pretty rare to find anyone in the USA who prefers that.

working with dates can be tricky...
in fm 11 open the inspector and set the date field format to the one that you would like
to use... make sure that the field is set to be a date field... you can check that in the
define field set up...
I've read over the linked post several times and I'm still not sure I understand it. Is it suggesting that I use "+" as delimiters for the segments of the date? January 7, 1981 would be 1981+1+7 ?
FileMaker would only accept a metric date format 2003.12.25
Filemaker requires dates to be entered in the format currently in use; this could be either the format saved with the file, or the format being used by the current operating system. You decide which one by setting a preference in File Options.
Note that formatting the way a date field displays the date (in the Inspector) has no bearing on the issue of entry.
That's the answer I was looking for.
It's under File Options like you said.
Specifically File (Menu)->File Options-> Text (Tab) -> Data Entry
I'm having the same issue where when I input a date format as dd/mm/yyyy, it will give me the mentioned above.
I know how to change the format used by the operating system, but how do you save a particular format with a file?
