In your example, "hawaiian" is not a word - only a sequence of characters. To search for a string that may be in the middle of a word, you need to enclose the string in wild cards, e.g.:

By the way, Hawaiian is a word, both a noun and an adjective according to Webster. But you are correct that within the email address, as in my example, it is a string in relation to the search.
