FMS 10 stopped and won't start

    robear

FileMaker Server 10 has been running successfully for 3 years, recently it stopped and became inaccesible.

      Can anyone explain:

      - the process for fixing FMS v10?

      - the actual cause of the failure to launch?

Attached files include the actual error message when starting the Console.
      "Unable to launch the application."
      Details indicate:

Those java apps are susceptible to heat, light, dust, movement, colour, sound... you name it.

          Have you restarted the machine?

Have you pointed your browser at http://localhost:16000?

Have you used system tools to see if the fmserver process is running?

            Hi Malcolm

Q: Have you restarted the machine?

            A: Yes

Q: Have you pointed your browser at http://localhost:16000?

A: Yes, and result was "Can't connect to server"

Q: Have you used system tools to see if the fmserver process is running?

A: Which system tool are you referring to?

A: also quite sure FMServer is not running, but may be wrong!

On a Mac it's Activity Monitor.  You could use the command line to say:

              ps -A | grep 'fmserver'

The result should look like this:

                 63 ??         0:26.48 /Library/FileMaker Server/Database Server/bin/fmserver_helperd -d

                510 ??         3:14.58 /Library/FileMaker Server/Database Server/bin/fmserverd -d

              65416 ttys001    0:00.00 grep fmserver

Did you update Java to current version when this started happening?

You did trash the old app, and the try http://localhost:16000?

You did locate the hand fix for that old java problem in the FM downloads?

                  Hi Malcolm

You might have meant Terminal (not Activity Monitor)

Last login: Fri Sep 14 00:25:49 on console

                  edit-3s-power-mac-g5:~ Edit3$

                  Now what?

Does this appear to be a Java or FM Server issue?

                    Hi Ron

Q1. "Update Java to current version"

                         - Client updated the Mac without my knowledge, so probably yes to Java being updated.

                         - Client only calls when something goes awry, first call in 2 years.

                    Q2. "Trash old app,"

                         - not sure what app you mean?

                         - localhost:16000 returns "Safari can't connect to server."

Q3. "hand fix for old Java problem"

                         - please clarify hand fix?

                         - is there a new Java Update that causes FM Server to break?

                         - if so, is anyone aware of the fix?

                    rl

There will be a java app created after you do the http://local host:16000 call. Trash that old one. Apply the fix which you can download from FileMaker and the do the URL call again from safari.

                        Hi Ron

Sorry, no such luck as no app was created after the localhost call.

Are you aware of the link to FileMakers fix?

                        I have been looking unsuccessfully!

You misunderstand. If you WERE administering prior to the upgrade, there is indeed an JAVA app because that is how you were administering it.

Regardless, though, you should still be able to download the hotfix from the FileMaker Site. The old app shouldn't hinder the creation of the new one, but the confusion lies in that you can confuse which one is the old and which one is the new. Here is the link:

                          Hope that helps.

FMS is not running. What that result is showing is that the only process that includes the string fmserver is the command that you just performed.

                            I would uninstall / reinstall.

Before you uninstall, use the command line to try and start the server:

                              fmsadmin start server

Then check the FMS event log, it will usually give you a clue why it fails to start.

You said that you couldn't get the Admin Console to start. That has nothing to do with the FMS Server daemon which is still running.

Open Activity Monitor and type in "fms" in the search field. When I do this I see fmserver_helperd and fmserverd. That means filemaker server is running. You do see these daemon processes correct?

The problem is that the Admin console, which is a JAVA application got corrupted when your client upgraded with the latest JAVA. That Admin console sends the commands to the FMS daemon only. It is for control only.

Before you uninstall, use the command line to try and start the server:

                                  fmsadmin start server

Then check the FMS event log, it will usually give you a clue why it fails to start.

I don't think that will succeed. The helper daemon is not running either. I'm fairly sure it needs to be alive on the Mac for commands to fmsadmin to work.

We've already got the output from Terminal. Neither of those processes are running.
