Yes, all the developers in and around San Mateo are a good representation of FMP developers from all around the world!
I kind of agree, perhaps in the age of the internet, digital media and a decent database system to capture results more of a "global scale" UE test could take place. Hmmm.
But since its not and San Mateo is quite a journey for many, I hope the results are not used to influence any drastic changes without first broadening the scope.
Maybe I am just jealous that I cannot apply
Will we all have to put up with the poor judgement, bad taste and naeve aesthetics of San Mateo! That's the fear isn't it? Now we are all asking, "Do the residents of San Mateo have weird cultural affects that will push development in odd directions?" Perhaps they'll request Manga style screen shifts. They may insist on loud background colours or recommend playing several chords of music each time the application starts.
Indeed in times of Webinars and video conferencing like Skype a personal attendance for a worldwide acting company sounds a bit strange and backwards.
There are not only users outside San Mateo, but also outside the US - think of good old Europe ...
I could not agree more!
from Good Old Germany
Gee guys ... Dave's reaching out to ask for opinions and help for UI, and he gets blasted. He said there'd be future studies; it's not like this will be the only opportunity.
Everyone's always griping that FileMaker doesn't listen to the users. They're reaching out, and the first thing everyone does is whack off the extended hand?
Whew. Glad I don't have Dave's job!
I wasnt being overly serious if that helps, Its great to see them reaching out
This is the second study invitation I've seen in the past 30 days regarding user experience with FileMaker, bot out of this area of the country.
I think it's great FMI is reaching out. I also agree with Steve in that I'm a little jealous that I can't partake because of geographic location.
Thanks everyone for the words of support and the constructive criticism. I certainly take no offense, and I'm sure no one else here at HQ does either. I completely empathize with the sentiments of those who feel slighted because it's so localized to our home base. Unfortunately, it's just not that easy to take a study like this on the road. I'm not sure exactly how this study is being conducted, since my involvement ends at posting the invites in the community, but I have been involved in UI/UX testing in the past, and when these things are done right they usually require a "lab" style setup with individual workstations for the users, recording the proceedings, and may even sometimes incorporate psychologists and/or psychometric consultants observing the users from behind two-way mirrors. Again, I'm not sure this one will be that extensive, but I'm sure there are logistics involved that make it far less mobile than we would all like for it to be. As always, thanks for your passion for FileMaker.
that sounds like a serious argument pro "San Mateo" indeed. Happy testing.
