    "The access privileges in this file have been damaged" and backup procedures

      I've experienced the much-documented problem of corrupted access privileges, leading to the error message "The access privileges in this file have been damaged or tampered with etc.". This is painful enough, but the MUCH bigger problem is that the backups made over the last 3 days by the hosting company have been backing up the corrupt file, with the users continuing to use the file, apparently without problems. So now they've lost 3 days' worth of data. I know there are various recovery options, which we're investigating, but presumably this highlights a problem with the backup procedures used by the hosting company. What are they doing wrong, and what should they do to detect this problem next time?
