I'm guessing it might have something to do with the merge field extending outside of the portal boundries? Just a guess.
Can you test it with a merge field that is would have smaller data? See if that shows up properly. Is it just the merge fields that have a lot of data?
It's the merge field extending outside of the portal. Even with smaller data.
It is only important not to start the line item above or left of the portal. They even may align at the top and/or the left portal boundary. Extending in other directions does no harm.

This was true in prior versions where you could place a field even halfway into the next field following row and it would work but I've noticed that 12 v3 (windows XP and 7; not yet tested on my Mac) will not allow a field to go even one px below the row without breaking.

To reduce the size of the merge, make all of the merge very small (like 3 pt) then set the size of only the first chevron to the font size you wish. The first chevron controls the formatting.
