Filemaker 12 fmnexus alternatives to connect to webservices?

    thomas_staehli

      Hello,

I'm currently redeveloping an old filemaker solution using FM 12. The old filemaker solution uses the fmnexus web service plugin to connect to some webservices to get some data from salesforce. Now it seems that this plug-in has been discontinued and is not compatible with FM 12 (filemaker crashed everytime I've tried to use it). Are there any alternative around that would do the same job?

          Hi Thomas,

I've been working with FileMaker and Web Services/SOAP a lot over the past few weeks. I'm using 2 different plug-ins for various projects, namely:

          BaseElements Plugin

          http://www.goya.com.au/baseelements/plugin

          Troi URL Plugin

          http://www.troi.com/software/urlplugin.html

You have to do a bit more work that you did with the old Web Services plugin (setting headers correctly, constructing the XML to POST, parsing the result etc). The BaseElements Plugin has some nice xpath functions which have come in very handy as well, not too mention the fact that it's free!

          HTH,

          Andrew

            Hi Thomas,

Without going into too much detail, we're currently developing a wide range of web services that will allow you to easily integrate your FMP 12 solutions with many existing third-party solutions. Salesforce is one of the third-party solutions on our list. We'll be launching these services at FileMaker Devcon August 2013 (pleas come see us on our exhibition stand and come to our vendor seminar).

You will shortly be able to sign up for beta testing at www.feedzon.com (although there's no website up just yet - please check back in a couple of weeks and register your interest). These services are going to be really easy to integrate and will require no plug-ins, so will work with all versions of FileMaker including Server & Go as well as pretty much any other technology. You won't need to learn any WSDLs or even worry about the XML... we're going to handle all the complex integration / dat conversion etc. on our web servers. It's gonna be pretty powerful stuff that will enable FileMaker to have two-way web integration...  to actually speak 'web'  for the first time.

That's about all I'm able to reveal for now, so please check back on www.feedzon.com in a couple of weeks and I hope to see you at Devcon.

            All the best,

            Chaim

              Hi, Andrew,

could please provide a short description how to make an "xml request with response" using one of these plugins? When you are not familiar with xml code it's very hard to figure out which function to use. Or maybe you could put a demo file here? That would be great.

              Thanks in advance,

              Giedrius

                Hi Giedrius,

The details will depend on the specific web service that you will be working with and what their API requires etc, but in general it usually here's an example of how it might work using the BaseElements plugin:

                1. the web service might require that you set a custom header before making your request, e.g.: by callling this function with the appropriate content-type parameters:

                BE_HTTP_Set_Custom_Header ( "Content-Type" ; "text/xml;charset=utf-8" )

                2. you might then need to make an HTTP POST request to the specified URL for the web service passing in a number of parameters, e.g. by calling this function with the appropriate URL and parameters:

                BE_HTTP_POST ( "http://www.webservice.com"; "parameter1=value1&parameter2=value2" )

                3. that will return a response from the web service that you can store in a field or parse out for the required content - the BE_XPath ( xml; xpath {; namespaceList } ) function comes in handy here.

That's a high level overview - you can get more details about the various functions in the BaseElements plugin at:

                https://github.com/nickorr/BaseElements-Plugin/wiki/Functions

                regards,

                Andrew

                  Hi Thomas,

Following my post on March 1st, we've now launched feedzon at http://www.feedzon.com. The Salesforce integration is definitely coming later this year and as with all feedzon web services, they require NO PLUG INS, so work on FileMaker Pro, Go, Server, IWP & CWP. Integration literally just requires a few simple script steps. No need to worry about the Salesforce API, as we do all the complex stuff on our web servers.

Check out the feedzon website for more and sign up for our newsletter. We've just opened a private beta testing program, with a short public beta to follow shortly. Here's a list of what we'll have live by FileMaker DevCon.

                  • 1D & 2D Barcode creation and barcode reading

                  • Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for documents

                  • OCR Business Cards Scanner for FileMaker Go

                  • Multilingual translation

                  • Text-to-Speech conversion

                  • Courier booking & tracking

                  • Zipcode / Postcode / Address lookup

                  • FTP services

                  • Two-way SMS

                  • Facebook & Twitter integration

If you're coming to FileMaker DevCon, be sure to attend our session on Tuesday at 3:45 pm in Sapphire 410 and to also visit our booth in the exhibition hall.

Thanks Andrew, it's a great tip for a bigginer in system integrations.
