If I read your question correctly, you're storing text characters in a number field inside FileMaker. Have you tried changing the number field to a text field?
Chaning the number field to a text field should capture every entry. But I want to do calculations on the number field. Does it matter if I define another calculation field based on the text field? Thanks for replying.
No, it really doesn't matter. You can perform a calculation using the Filter function to strip out all non-numeric characters.
But just out of curiousity, can you explain a bit more about the need / desire to store text characters in a number field? It's really not a good practice (as you're discovering at the moment), even though FileMaker lets you get away with it.
It is more of a need for data entry than a need of design. People may just enter the text for the reason of not having a numeric value in the numeric field at data entry. I am adding in strict numeric validation and display messages for preventing people from doing it again.
Thank you for your replies.
