I'm trying to generate a report that will return all students in all grades summarized by each year. see attached file thanks
Few things initially, a Cartesion relationship (X) only needs one field one each side, you related it twice. I didn't see a use for it on your report so I removed that part all together.
Second, your Students table is not normalized. You are storing their grade (year they were in it) as fields, this should be stored in it's own separate table with only a few fields. This makes sense if you think about it, as not all students will necessarily be in your database for all K-8 values.
After the above modifications, you subsummarize by the new GradeYears table "YEAR", then another subsummary for "GRADE", this groups your report together by year, and then by grade.
I related your years table back in, but that is also not used. Hope this helps!
Daniel Shanahan has a good video on normalization of databases. It's a key concept to setting up a RDBMS (relational database), and a good watch.
thanks for the help but i must still be missing something here. I sent the one i'm working on. It sorts by year but not by grade?
did you look at the report layout in the file I sent back? There are two subsummary objects, one sorts by year to group it by year, then another below that groups by grades inside of year. You have to script or sort manually by both year, then grade, to see the two subsummaries. Look at it in layout mode to confirm.
