to find the first "last name" in a layout when there are 3 of the same fields.
could you post a sample file so we can see what you're trying to do? your description is kind of vague.
You could make a button tied to a script that loops through each record and stops on a record when it matches your condition.
... this sounds to me like you are trying to find an object on a layout in layout mode....
... which a find button won't do.
I am also wondering why you would have 3 copies of the same field on a layout...
Every good question with regard to having 3 copies of the same field in the layout. I wasn't the one that created the layout. But I know we have used this layout for years. And when you would use the find button it would go to the first last name field at the top of the page.
I've attached a pdf of the document. See where the last name field is in the top of the document. Then go down to Section "O" where it says "Prospect Name" that field is also "Last Name". I want the "Find Cursor" to start at the first "Last Name" field. For some reason now it starts the find in Section "O".
Thank you in advance for your help.

I do not see an attachment, can you upload it to yousendit or sendspace and post a link to it here? Just in case the uploader is not working for you.
Are they really the same field or just labelled the same?
I fixed the issue. There were 3 fields named "Last Name" which were through out the layout. I wanted the "find button" to go to the first of these fields but it was going to the 2nd "Last Name" field. I deleted the 2 other "Last Name" fields in position 2 and 3 so the cursor when doing a "find" would have to go to the first position. Then I added the 2 deleted fields back to the layout. It worked. Now all 3 "Last Name" fields are back in the layout. Now when using the "Find" button it will go to the first "Last Name" field position.
Thanks for your reply.
They are indeed the same field. I didn't make the layout. I guess they wanted the last name to appear in 3 locations.
Interesting. Out of curiousity, I wonder what determines this if/when there are multiple copies of a field. Does it go by creation order, or front-to-back layering of the objects? Just curious if you tried sending to front or back to see if that changed your results.
Have they thought about re-evaluating the need for the 3 copies of the same records. Maybe the other 2 don't need to be fields? They could be merge fields if they just want the data displayed, and you don't need to edit in those locations.
Best of luck!
I don't think the field a field object is pointing to matters. It's probably just a tab order issue.
