Defining your fields as text or number fields will automatically pull up the number pad and text key configs on iOS (just as date fields will pull up the calendar wheel).
Dave's linked article is geared towards dropdown menus so I'm not sure how much help that will be, but it does state in there that there is no way to turn off the default keyboards/selectors using native filemaker field entry.
There is another method people have been using for making their own "custom keyboards", that involves replacing fields with web viewer objects, then the "keys" are buttons that run scripts to modify the web viewer content (and save to the appropriate hidden fields, if needed).
This article details "some" of that technique:
IE for entry in one "number" field, you would need to:
1) hide the number field from the layout
2) Add a webviewer that is set to display the number field contents
3) create your custom number pad keyboard
4) create a script that "loads" the number field content into a global "editing" field that you use when a user clicks the webviewer.
5) script the buttons on the number pad to modify the global editing field.
6) script a "save" method that shoots the data back to the webviewer for display, and the hidden field for storing the value.
You could use this technique from Yann Liqueur-Salzédo.

Hello All !!!
I am developing a application in which I have designed Keypad my own so I want to Entree into fields from my Keypad.
but when I focused into any field, iPAD's keypad is opening. Is it possible to avoid this..??
I want to disable it for a layout not for application...
I have an another question too -
Is it possible to set to open Numpad or Char Pad so that user have not to change pad "Num to Char" or "Char to Num".
Anirudh - did anyone's suggestions help you?
Haven't had luck with this solution when it comes to the number keypad. Defining a field as date does bring up the date picker, but whether I define a field as text or number, I always get the text keyboard. I can't get the numeric keypad to activate. Is this a bug or am I missing something?
I have this fantastic BlueTooth keyboard for my iPad. It really does make use of the iPad and FMGo much simpler. So much more realestate when you don't have a great big screen keyboard popping up all the time.
We need to have a bit more control about when the keyboard pops up and perhaps about where the field is when entered...
when you select a text or number field it will cause the keyboard to pop up.
Make sure that you do not have the select/Perform box ticked while using a "go to field" script step and the keyboard won't pop up.
This is not accurate. A Go to Field script will pop up the keyboard regardless of what is checked in the Select checkbox.
Sorry, my bad. Commit records after going to the field(without select/perform) to enter into that field without activating the keyboard

Paparooster: Thanks for the example, always good to have hand-on examples. It has spurred me to spend some time improving my existing inspection forms. Ideally the keyboard would be reusable. Salzedo has a portal type keyboard, but I'm not able to re-create such an input method. https://fmdev.filemaker.com/message/96116#96116#96116
