Thanks, Mike! This seems to lead to a solution — and I can tell the client that he can do it himself.
A very quick test worked, but curiously there were two different dialogs for attempting to edit a locked record. Should have made notes...
A checkbox says:
This action cannot be performed because this field is not modifiable.
A number field says:
Your access privileges do not allow you to perform this action.
(When searching, I actually saw the thread title, but it did not seem to relate to my issue!)

Maybe I'll do that, Mike — I just saw the light very quickly and had to go and see if it leads me to a solution.
