The auto-enter option only lets me fill in the first value of a repeating field.
How can I have the second repetition (or third, or fourth) auto entered ON EACH RECORD CREATION?
Can't be done, Note the specification in the field dialog of "maximum number of repetitions". This makes me conclude that filemaker treats the extra repetitions as optional, and doesn't really save it into the schema where auto-enter calculations would be possible.
You can get around it with script triggers on whatever layout you're creating the records on.
But more importantly, consider whether you should be using repeating fields at all. One of the developers whose solutions I inherited used repeating fields for absolutely everything (phone numbers, email addresses, even "recent communications"), so I went through a phase where I was completely disgusted with any usage of them. I've since come to accept their value, but ONLY in specific use cases where a related table or separate fields add too much overhead to the schema and flow of data.
darn good question. I doubt that it can be done as an auto enter option, I think this would have to happen via a script only??
Wow… this is the first time I get a “can’t be done” on Filemaker L
Thanks for clearing this up, mike…

I should clarify that "can't be done", means that it can't be done in the field schema dialog box. It CAN be done (at least from the users perspective) using scripting as noted by Peter and I above.
Part of the fun of Filemaker is figuring out how to do something if the original problem hits a brick wall. A lot of semi-prolific filemaker development has come out of circumventing normal methods.
IE, do you think we'd have ExecuteSQL() as a tool now in 12, if people were overly happy with setting up relationships and TOs to have to calculate simple sums and counts? Someone found a way to circumvent the need for relationships (plug-in, but still valid) and circumvented to confines of native filemaker. One thing I like about Filemaker is that they pay attention to these things, and end up adding them in.
Use a lookup or script it. Lookups bring across all fields in a repeating field. If your grabbing data from different fields and placing them into a repeating field a scripted approach may be easiest to implement and understand.
Use a lookup, not auto-enter calc.
This is how I understood it, Mike, no worries !

Depending from what you have to auto-insert into the other repeats, you can use a trick...
For example, if you have to insert zero into all repeats, check both data ( 0 ) and calculated value ( replace existing value ) : Extend ( YourRepeatingField ).
The same trick could be used to auto enter serial numbers.
Retrieving data ...
