Sandi, I have done exactly what you are wanting to do for many companies, if you would like, send me a private message so i can get more details into what you might need for your solution. I have a great deal of experience with all kinds of hardware and I'm sure we could find something that works!
Would you like it to work for Filemaker on a desktop computer? If so, this can be easily accomplished. You can use a standard USB or PS/2 barcode scanner to input text directly into a field. These range from $30+ depending on the type of scanner, speed, etc. There are downloadable barcode fonts (some even free) that can be used to generate the barcode in a field on screen. Any printer can print the labels, however if you want a dedicated barcode printer, Zebra brand is very good. I know the Zebra Stripe S4M can be easily setup as i have used it for direct barcode label printing from FMPA12 Using the common types of barcode formats.
You might want to take a look at the detailed document I have in my documents section on barcodes too. Just do a tag search for ronsmithmd and you'll find it.
