Reading from USB Serial... on a budget

Hi

I'm exploring FM for my project and have one snag. Currently I use a program/ language called Processing to monitor my usb port for incoming data, look for a known start byte, then parse out the packet and store the bytes I want in a SQLite db. I am looking for a way to do this in FM (and I don't want to spend $1k on Trio, in fact, i'd like to spend under $100).

I see two possibilities:

Preferred - some FM plug in or background script that will take the place of Processing and store the bytes I want in a FM database.

Less attractive - I continue using processing to monitor the serial port and save to a FM db in stead of a SQLite db. Either a timed import or on the fly direct store?

While anything is possible, I am wondering which of these two is easiest to implement? And a nudge in the direction I should be looking to create a solution.

I am using FM Pro Advanced 12 and new at it.

Thanks

Mike
