Volunteering can be very rewarding. Knowing you are helping someone who actually needs a leg up gives you the warm-fuzzys.
I have deliberately over many years donated a small portion of my time to a worthy cause. I selected a few beneficiaries which are local and work on sustainablity problems in a practical way. I built a community-based CO2 emissions monitoring and reduction rewards system and have worked with SeedSavers on seed sharing projects and I even have a film credit for a documentary about traditional Pacific Islander seedsharing practices and the impact of agri-business on local food supplies. Such interesting and challenging stuff!
