When moving the databases you have to transfer the externally stored files back into the database. Then upload to FM Server and transfer the data back out.
how would I move them back into the database? thanks!
When you turn on External Storage for a container field, if you already have records with data in the container field you are asked to "transfer container data" when you close Manage Database. This transfers all the files you have stored in container fields out to the os.
When moving the location of the database, like you did, from local to hosted, you need to turn off External storage for the container field. Then transfer the container data back into the database. Move it to the new location, turn on external storage and transfer the data out again.
When uploading files you do not have to move the external files back into the database.
(This could become a nightmare if you had gigabytes of stuff to mave back and forth).
Neverthless, it sounds like something went wrong.
FileMaker puts external files in a folder called "Files", and look something like this
When you upload the file in FMServer you select the desired file, and FileMaker Server grabs the "Files" folder, and puts it on the server for you. If the file is manually moved, then you are in trouble, but it doesn't sound like you did that.
All that being said, you can move the container contents back into the file before moving them too. I recently had a file where there were gigabites of images and...well it was a mess getting them out. Change were made to the system and now it hums along much better.
Based on what you say I'm in trouble .
How can I restore the links to my containers. I had a server which hard drives were replaced and now all links say "Missing...". There are about 28000+ of them.
Thanks in advance.
- look at the dialogue graphic for the path 2/3 the way down for WHERE to store the external container data.
- use that to figure out where the files are being held (hopefully, not on the now-gone drives)
- using thestorage path dialogue again to re-set the path to where they are now, relative to your file.
Or to make it a bit easier:
- create a new record in the hosted solution and insert something in the container
- look in the OS where FMS put the file
- move your old files to the same folder structure
How on a macMini server would one "- look in the OS where FMS put the file"?
