    Inputs from a dialog box

The Filemaker Pro dialog seems to be very limited in terms of being able to prodide inputs to a script. I would like to make a script which allows inputting search parameters. Can the three input fields of the "show custom dialog" script step be used for this by specifying the database fields for searching, inputting the appropriate criteria and running the script in Find mode? Or does "commit data" simply mean enter the data in a normal field in browse mode?

If show custom dialog can not be used for this purpose, what would be the best approach? Perhaps a custom table following the structure of the search target table for accepting and running searches, and fo saving search criteria? Any insights appreciated.
