Tony, the FM ODBC driver is for using FM as the SOURCE for other applications. If you want Excel as Source, then it would need a driver. I don't know of one right off hand. I may depend on the platform(s) you are using.
Import or Execute SQL are supported on Escel via ODBC ,
but 'external ODBC datasource' (use like a fm table in relation gratph) is only supported to Oracle,MSSQL,MySQL.
ESS (external SQL source) does require the DS (data source) set up and is limited to those approved dbs.
The Execute SQL (script step) for INSERT, UPDATE or DELETE and Import (script step) for SELECT may be possible with other dbs. This is not the ESS and there is no 'live connection' to the SQL tables. Getting a good driver is the key. Does Excel have a driver? I just never tried to make Excel a SOURCE.
Well, let me qualify that: I do use web apps to bridge communication gaps between FM and other systems - again not a live view into the SQL through the Graph in FM. There may even be plugin fictions that would help.
it's a bit complex and that FMI chose to name a function similar to a script step does not help!
If Excel is to be a SOURCE, then you'd need a valid driver. What FM could do with that connection also would rely on the driver's capability (if any).

Windows is shipped with Excel ODBC driver included whether Excel itself is or not .
Old version of it supports only .xls
I don't know about Windows8 and later.
Thank you, '19752'! I got away from my Windows machine for a while and just couldn't check. I don't know if Mac Excel has the driver or not. Again, I just don't try ODBC and Excel (haven't needed to). But I appreciate this kind of info, as we all know the client will ask someday...
