Are you using "Open Remote" to connect to the hosted file? How are you specifying the server in the Open Remote dialog?
Thanks for the reply - yes I am using Open Remote - and also using Filemaker Go to attempt to connect on an iPad.
For the host address - I am only putting in the public IP of the router, should I be entering something else in addition?
From what I can tell so far - I cant even connect while on the same LAN either. I must be missing a setting somewhere in FM Server or something :S
You need to put in the fixed IP of the FileMaker server if you're on the LAN (inside the router). Start there. If that's not working, then there's a problem with the server setup.
Thanks Mike - I will try that shortly.
Would I assume correctly that if I want to test that with filemaker go and I am on the wifi network of that router, I should be able to put in the fixed IP address of that machine (the 192.) and connect that way?
If that is the case, I am fairly sure I tried that last night and the server shows up, but says it cant find any files. I will have to verify though.
I appreciate you taking some time to reply.
EDIT: I am starting to wonder if it isnt a port issue, I think I might have forgotten to open up the 16000 ports which is required in the documentation. Going to give that a try.
16000 ports are only required for the admin utility. Port 5003 is for filemaker traffic.
Your router might be blocking that port, some routers require you to setup port forwarding to send inbound 5003 traffic to the server on the LAN.
You are correct in that if you're on the same private LAN, the 192.xx IP address should be ok. Outside the network requires the public-facing IP.
Mike, your genius my firewall was blocking port 5003 - opened it up and I am good to go!
I didnt think that was the problem becuase when I was hosting it on Filemaker Pro it worked fine - but it seems the server works differently. Regardless, thank you VERY much!
(I dont see a way to mark your reply as the answer but if there is a way please let me know.)
If you can see the server in the Open Remote dialog, but no files show up, check these variables:
1) Make sure the files have the "[fmapp]" extended privilege enabled for at least one privilege set, and that privilege set is attached to at least one active account.
2) Make sure the account you're attempting to use to attach has access (i.e., has the "[fmapp]" extended privilege enabled), or that you have the server set to show all files.
Thanks, but I just beat Mike Mitchell to the inevitable punch. Luckily FM has simplified the ports required in FM13, but you still have to properly configure ALL of your network devices when deploying a server.
Long as it's fixed, it's all good.
