Same approach would apply for using teh PHP FM API with a FM table. I assume
If you are comfortable with using jQuery, you might want to take a look at using jQuery to handle your Ajax needs. In my opinion, it really simplifies the code that one has to write to get the job done well in a cross-browser-compatible fashion.

There is a lot of documentation on that page, which can be overwhelming. I would suggest that you first go to the very bottom of the page content and look at the simplicity of the code in the examples provided there. That might provide you with some good inspiration.
