Font Smoothing in FileMaker Pro 13

Question asked by CP42Kx07 on May 26, 2014

Has anyone else experienced problems with the appearance of fonts differing between FMP v12.0.5 and v13.0.3 on Mac OSX 10.9.3 (iMac non-Retina display)?

Using Arial 12pt (bold) looks fine in v12 but is far less clear in v13 as shown in the attached png files.

The files are screen grabs, with the original window at 200% zoom, further magnified with DigitalColor Meter.

The obvious difference is that v12 appears to use greyscale smoothing / anti-aliasing whereas v13 uses colour.

Is there any known work-around for this as the resulting text is far less legible than before?

The v13 color smoothing is only visible when "Use LCD font smoothing when available" is selected in System Preferences / General. Deselecting this option improves Arial 12pt (bold) but considerably reduces legibility of Arial 12pt (regular) and all 10pt text.

Clearly there have been some changes in the way that FMP handles font smoothing in v13.

I wonder whether there is any way to adjust for these changes (e.g. change colour smoothing to greyscale...)?

N.B. Editing the "NSGlobalDomain AppleFontSmoothing" setting does not address the issue.
