I'd like to modify the main page in what our server publishes via WebDirect. I use Dreamweaver CS4 to do basic changes on a web site. Will this work to edit the WebDirect page? Any idea on where to find the page?
Dreamweaver will work fine, just try and keep the code cleaned up if you use the WYSIWYG editor in dreamweaver. You'll have to edit the "dynamic" sections of the page manually.
Oh, and also make sure you make a backup copy of the index page before you start fiddling around with it.
You might have some trouble with Dreamweaver clobbering the magic code FileMaker Server looks for to show the list of databases, since it won't necessarily make sense of it and might mangle it. I'd build the custom page in Dreamweaver with a placeholder for the bits of FileMaker Server code, then add the FileMaker Server code using a plain text editor just before publishing.
Be sure to back up your modified pages, too. It's not impossible for them to get replaced with the default pages by a FileMaker Server update.
I have posted both code and instructions for setting up a custom webpage to use for launching and returning from WebDirect sessions, in place of the rather awful default page provided by the FM Server, at:
That page tells how to replace the default using a custom webpage, and it has a link to another page about building proper file-launcher links to specific WebDirect files from your own page(s).
If you're interested in doing this work (for a fee), send me an email at email@example.com.
