I end up with an install of Pro and an install of Pro Advanced. Never
managed two copies of either Pro or Advanced of the same version.
The other approach was to install parallels and a different license key on
the windows version of pro or Advanced.

Try in terminal:
open -n /Applications/FileMaker\ Pro\ 13\ Advanced/FileMaker\ Pro\ Advanced.app
Also seek clarification from your sales engineer your licence permits you to do this. I use this on occasion but I have a site licence and am well within my maximum number of installs.
very nice. It's working for me.
Thanks for the tip. I just tried this with my development server and it worked. I thought that FMS would see the duplicate license key and shut my second connection down. Instead it seems to see them as coming from the same computer so allows it. Which I believe is well within the FM license agreement. After all there isn't a limit on the number of FileMaker Processes that can be running on the same computer
Thanks to everyone who took the time to entertain this.
