Trying to allow users to open a new record in a new window with one button on the existing open layout. The layout would be the same only the new window would automatically show a new record. Is this possible?
You can do it with a script.
I'm by no means an expert, but you'd want to write a script that does something like:
New Window - You might want to offset the window by 50 points, just so the user knows it's a new window. To do this in the New Window Options enter 50 in the box next to 'Distance from left'
Go To Layout [Select the layout you want to go to]
Then create your button. Set the button to perform a the script you just wrote.
To add to mhuber's recommendation, you might want to look at:
Show All Records
Show Omitted Only
Why? Because this isolates only the new record in the new window. Prevents the user from accidentally editing an existing record.
So the complete script would look like:
Go to Layout
New Record / Request
As an aside, you can also look at the various windowing options to do things like hide the Status Bar, hide some of the window gadgets, etc. Or, perhaps explore the possibility of using a popover instead of a new window for better compatibility with WebDirect and iOS.
Your addition absolutly adds a layer of 'fool-proofing'. Good catch!
What you need to be careful about is making sure that the user working on that new record does not continue using that window when they ought to be reverting to the original window.
If you are on V12 or V13 then you can easily control that by making the new window modal. Users will then have to close it before doing almost anything else. This is an excellent method for retaining context within a found set of records.
We've also found the modal window to be very useful to see the full content of a record from a list view of records where the data has been abstracted. It's a one step GTRR from a button within the body part of the List View layout.
I hope this helps,
Awesome!! Thanks all!! You're right Mr. Wolff, we are just skiers. Myself and another patroller are trying to build a database for our dispatch and snow safety program. I've spent the summer teaching myself Filemaker and my head is spinning!! It's been fun, though. This is great software and it's replacing thousands of spreadsheets.
Many Thanks to all of you!
Look us up if you're in Colorado.
Thanks a ton. You're additions made total sense.
Great tip and I'll mention this when training our dispatchers. They'll need to be mindful of what record they're on. However, our dispatchers will have multiple windows/records open to service multiple responses occuring simultaneously. Filemaker actually cleans up what we had before which was an array of excel spreadsheets which, as you may imagine, was a complete mess.
Many thanks for the reminder.
