How to assess the already in place sorting so I can write a de-dupe loop

A few months ago we merged several contact databases together with the sincere intent to deDupe right away.

Didn't happen.

So, the staff decided to use the "first" of any duplicated record as it showed up in our database.

Now, I need to finally write that deDupe loop (10,000 records with likely 2000 duplicates).

So I can make the above referenced "first" record the "primary" and then set the dupeRecord data into a separate table (don't have the nerve to fully delete) ....

  • HOW CAN I KNOW WHAT METHOD FILEMAKER IS USING TO SORT BY WHEN I SEARCH BY NAME, ETC AND THERE ARE SEVERAL THAT SHOW UP?

The idea is:

LOOP:

Sort by X.

Loop throough and if match fields from prior record match the next record, mark that next record as a duplicate (to be deleted from primary Contact table into an "old data table".

EndLoop

Back up the Contactstable

Go to primary table and remove duplicates

I've got to be sure that the first record is the first record we're using now.

Thanks

Scott
