I wouldn't know of any way to reduce pdf file-size by FM by it's one.
To reduce PDF's filesize, you have to purchase Acrobat Professional and also this would be a step to perform manually outside of FM.
There are PlugIn's which are supposed to do though without leaving FM-Plattform. first to check would be the MonkeyBreadSoftware MBS-PlugIn. I know such a request was asked to MBS recently and think was answered positively:
MBS Plugin can apply Quartz Filters with PDFKit functions to e.g. reduce image quality for smaller files (e.g. replace uncompressed pictures with JPEG compressed ones).
Rather than create a big PDF and then crunch it down later on why not have more control over the creation phase using something like iText and optimised stored images at the resolution that you wish in the finished item
Have done this very successfully with a lot of success.
Well, if you want it automated and for PDFs generated by FileMaker?
I had a couple of people ask for a plugin, so I added functions to do it to mine.
A very easy and inexpensive solution (Mac only):
Open the PDF file under "Preview" (in my example, the file size is 20 MB)
- Export (not "Export to PDF")
- Choose format, here: PDF
- In "Quartz Filter, choose: "Reduce file size"
That's it! (here, the file size is now ... 36.7 MB)
Warning, it works poorly for PDF that require a certain graphic precision (eg sheet music)
Sorry for my bas English ! I hope you understand me !
The Reduce file size filter is very aggressive. I normally make my own which doesn't reduce image quality that much.
Sorry ! The file size is now ... 3.67 Mo (and no 36.7 !)
Great suggestion. I have Acrobat Pro which also has that function. Mainly wanted a way to do it within Filemaker.
This solution doesn't justify the cost, but I'll keep it in mind for future projects.
Could you AppleScript or VB Script the actions so that you stay within FileMaker as much as possible?
