We've updated machines to 13v9 before installing custom SSL certs without issue.
The instructions do seem a bit over blown, and so complex as to be very un-FileMaker

Thanks John. Good to hear you have done it successfully. I just wanted to confirm it would work if you didn't follow the sequence. I figured it would have to because it would be ridiculous not to be able to later add a 3rd party certificate. But thank you for confirming.
In case this is helpful to anyone following this thread ...
I learned that you can upgrade your server to 13.0v9 but continue to operate without turning on SSL. I also installed certificates so that if I choose to turn on SSL at a later date, I can do so. But for the time being, I wanted to keep the server up-to-date without impacting any of my users. Therefore, whether the clients have 13.0v9 or not makes no difference if I have not switched on SSL.
When and if I do, however, at that time the clients who are on earlier versions FMP or FMPA will see a dialog box that informs them of the need to upgrade to 13.0v9.
Taylor, I think it would be helpful if you post the instructions for installing the certificates with the fmsadmin Terminal command because it's different than the method used by servers running Apple's Server.app.
Dennis: This is the previous post on installing a Comodo SSL certificate on a Mac. But it is similar to other certificates too.
