If you have the right relationship set up then you can use "Go to related record". If you want to preserve your currnent found set through you have to specify to use a new window.
Same with doing a find (in case you don't have or don't want a relationship): you would have to spawn a new window and do your find in that window to preserve your current found set.
If the sponsor record is also a member of the found set, then it can be done, in the same window. If this is not the case, you can put up a message like "extend the found set to include the sponsor ? yes/no".
without relationship, the easiest way is to using a script.
Is the sponsor in a separate field (hopefully the ID, not just the name..)? If so, load that ID into a script-variable, open a new window, perform a find using that variable..
every topic on this forum that starts with “I want to”, “I need to”, “we have to” and so on, you got the rhythm, has me instantly freezing.
I freeze, as in not reading further, and start thinking: why ?
Why does this poster want what he wants, why does his world stop spinning without his wish happening, where does his problem flow and start out from ? Do I have his problem or ever had it ? Do any users of mine ever mentioned such a thing ? Did I ever read in a book or on a forum about something similar ? Does it make sense ?
And mostly: does his wish fit into an optimised interaction design ?
You case is a typical one. I agree that we don't know enough about your workflow and if I stick to your post I can script exactly what you want, but in a case like yours I would propose to have a sponsor button on the client layout which simply opens a popover with the sponsor data and an ok button to be hit when you saw what you were looking for...
The important question is whether you want to add the sponsor to the found set or treat it as a record just to view and then to discard.
View and Discard: use a new window
set var $_sponsor to sponsor id
perform find for $sponsor id
Now you have two windows, one with the sponsor and behind it the found set. You can keep the sponsor window and switch between them or close the sponsor window and return to the record/set you were viewing. I prefer this method as it is simple and easy to work with.
Add the sponsor to the found set:
Extend Found Set is the tool to use.
Manually: Enter Find Mode, Enter the Data in the proper field and then select from the Requests menu Extend Found set. This will add the new found set of one or more records to your existing found set.
Script: now that you have done that you can create a script and insert the Found Set step Extend Found Set (restore) to do the same thing. Or insert the Extend Found Set and manually insert your find.
One of these options will answer your question.
If you are using FM 13 explore using a PopOver ... will not change the found set. Need to have relationship in your relationship graph ..... Contact to contact_SPONSOR ....same table with SponsorID = ID.
Thanks thats really helpful. I had forgotten about using another Window. Still new to Filemaker....
Thank you - great answer..
Thanks I like your first solution as well. I just wish that when the found set includes all the records that we could just jump to another record using its unique ID (index key)
That's great. I didn't really need to go to the sponsor record like I thought I did, just be able to look at some of it's details, and the popover does the job.
