This annoying blue outline around selected fields makes it difficult to precisely align objects.
Is there a way to disable it?
there's no option to disable it, AFAIK.
But there are tricks to make layout adjustment easier:
- cmd/d to duplicate existing field (::address1), assign the new field (::address2)
- adjust with inspector OR arrow-keys
- repeat then and the next fields (::city) will be placed with same distance to the previous!
Using the grid might also help in positioning the objects.
not to mention the "T" square guides, the "align objects" options and so on...
would be nice to be able to change the highlight colour, not sure if that's worth a feature request though
Thank guys, I am aware of all of those alignment methods but even with those I find myself still fighting with FileMaker to get things precisely aligned. If you drag over a few fields with the field picker it's a major hassles to try and realign them how you want.
We should be able to control field size, space and distance of these objects from one another in the field picker so they align how we want them before they hit the layout...and these settings should be linked to the theme.
It was poor decision to use an outline as the highlight method. It is clear that whoever designed this feature does not use FileMaker regularly to create precise layouts. Using a fill color would have been a much better decision because it does not obstruct your view of the distance between elements...as illustrated in this screen capture:
You be the judge. Which of these is more readable?
Since FileMaker reads all of these forums posts I am sure that they already have a team of people working to fix this.
According to their job offers, FMI's just starting to build up a real Testing & SW Quality Assurance Department

FWIW (probably nothing), when I am creating stuff that I want lined up like this I do this (probably others do too):
Increase window magnification. From the first field, CTRL+D (duplicates). Then using the arrow keys, put it where I want--nine pixels over lines it up on the left, then arrow down to the right spacing--now you have 2 fields. Then without deselecting, CTRL+D 4 more times will put the next 4 fields underneath and aligned and spaced. Then double click each field and change the field reference.
Of course dynamic guides, and dragging some layout lines help too.
With the layout magnified, I can kind of see right thru the blue lines, so they don't bother me
My own lament is that, when you've selected multiple items, you've effectively turned off the Position and Size numbers in the Position Inspector. It used to be that FMP would report the specs for the entire set of objects that you'd selected, which was wonderfully handy for a wide variety of reasons. Now they apparently feel that we're better served by blind ignorance.
Agreed, that's the real painpoint when working with multiple objects on a layout. Now I always have to group & ungroup...
As to the original topic, the fill color idea would be better than the current blue haze. Though the old way, with large points at the corners for easy resizing, would be better still.
