I appreciate this, Beverly, but I found majority of the posts here are more challenging/interesting. I saw some amazing posts on Forums, but a good chunk of them ware by people asking for help as they did not read the manual.
Yes, I also received that terrible news by eMail. What's terrible is not the merging per say, I makes much more sense to have one and only one company hosted forum.
But what's terrible is that they did it the most laziest way possible. Shutting down the server, and destroying all the messages, thats' an interest crime.
I'am all for the merging, BUT done properly, that means keeping the messages. I've never saw such a lazy migration process, it's highly disrespectfull of the community. Shameful.
P.S : Not to mention that the older forums are much more organized that the community mess
And that is different, how, nicolai?!
Truly, I've been on fm forums since AOL had one. Same kind of posts, different day. DevCon has been going 20 years, FM developers chatting, sharing, asking, complaining, learning, teaching and all that years before the first DevCon.
There will always be those who forget to Read The Fine Manual(s)!
I followed the link in the email. FileMaker explain that they are merging the posts and treads from the two fora into one. So ypur old posts will not be lost.
And they also explain that if your account name/email is identical, then your two accounts will merge as well.
And you can't change the email address on the Forums site so that posts will transfer over.........
It would be awful if this place became a 'read-the-manual-before-asking-questions' kind of place. Every developer should be given every opportunity and outlet to learn from the amazing people here, despite their level. I cut my teeth here and felt no pressure to GO READ before I received answers. I don't want this to turn out to be that place.
Reading the manual and getting expert advice are completely different. Discussions can't come from the books, multiple points of view can't come from the books. I learned more on here and at DevCon than reading the manuals.
I'm glad for people who patiently answer newbie questions, and I'm trying to contribute to that as well.
Right. They suggest that we set the email addresses to be the same, but I can't see how to edit the email in forums.
They are supposedly going to merge the posts and threads, but I believe the message is that any links to old posts will be broken. In other words, they aren't going to provide a server-based mapping, so any site outside of FileMaker's control that linked to forums.filemaker.com will now have every link broken. That's a terrible disservice to the FileMaker community, especially those who might come across another site and be linked to FileMaker's own "forums," only to be given an error message.
If the posts/threads are being brought over, it is possible to use that transfer process to create a map that will forward any old links to the new post/thread URL. It's work, but it's worth doing to avoid breaking a big chunk of the FileMaker web.
I see this as just making the Community slower than it already is.
I used the Forums and they were helpful as you could get direct support for issue from FM there. There were a lot of Newbie questions, but that is ok. I did find the seasoned Forum users to be a bit abusive at times and that is why I wandered to TechNet. TechNet was great and was a collection of more advanced users with a lot of experience and information. It was also easier to use.
The community is not user friendly and I rarely pop in here these days because it is so hard to simply follow up on the few topics I want to or find new interesting topics. I also get emails for a bunch of stuff I have no interest in. Seems like merging the Forums here may make it even harder to find information and answers. The search function in the Community is horrible. However, I saw this coming when TechNet went away and the Community essentially became a different version of the Forums.
Did I mention the Communtiy is extremely slow and hard to use?! I sure hope FMI dumps Jive for something better.

Doesn't work - it tells you there is already an account with that email...
Possibility that 2 accounts are in a forums...

No, it should not. That's why having two separate forums made much more sense. If someone has trouble with SQL query or XML, I am glad to spend hours helping. I looked up a random question on Forums and user was asking how to change from Browse to Layout mode. I am sorry, but if you don't read manual/ or use help - just google it.

This is true. I am yet to find a FM forum you have never posted .
