a way to find layout objects names it's using Base Elements that analyse the DDR and let you search for objects name
(see the attached image). You get the position, the name and the layout.
As far as I know there aren't FMP native features to find or edit styles assigned to objects automatically, it would be cool if I missed this feature :-) because when you need to edit complex solutions there is a lot of frustrating manual work!
not within FileMaker. As Giancarlo mentioned, using an analysing Tool can help - via DDR (FileMaker Pro Advanced)
In addition to these suggestions, I believe you can copy the entire layout and use either BaseElements plugin or 2empowerFM's Clipboard Explorer to extract the xml. Then look for objects that have "localcss" applied to them.
For a quick check, I will often "Select All" in Layout mode and watch the styles menu in the inspector. If the arrow on the menu turns red, I know I've got local styles somewhere. If it stays black, then everything is using a style and there are no local styles.
So then I'll divide and conquer… drag a selection rectangle to select just the objects on one side of the layout. If the triangle stays black, then I know that half of the layout is good. So then I select the top half of the other side. If on that half the triangle stays black, then I select half of the next half, and so on, until I narrow down which objects make the triangle turn red.
If you're using a Mac you can download a free tool called fmXRaySpecs. It's a great way to quickly audit a layout without pulling a DDL. With this tool you can copy the contents of a layout to the clipboard, then push a button in fmXRaySpecs to extract the clipboard contents.
Go into layout mode, set an inspector to show the Styles tab, then keep the tab key pressed to "quickly" travel from object to object and watch in the inspector for the down-pointing triangle becoming red.
I feel your pain and there's much help we could get from FM on this topic. Some valid ideas were expressed in the various "what you expect..." threads.
Thanks for this post :-)
fmXRaySpecs it's really a nice and useful tool!
I'm using TextMate + FileMaker bundle + clip manager 5 Clip Manager for Mac
This are very useful tools but fmXRaySpecs complete them for free!!
One more thing, since FMP12 copying and pasting modified clipboard layout objects very often does not work for me, but I don't understand why (clipboard edited with Text Mate, Base Elements Plugin, Script Master Plugin).
It's working perfectly with scripts, custom functions, tables... not with layout objects.
Now with clip manager 5 it's working well but I've been using it only two weeks (it's very very useful).
What other tools are available?
