      ! Duplicates

      Post

Having tons of problems finding duplicates in a constrain find.

Is it not possible that Filemaker could actually have some detailed instructions as to what the ! symbol in the Constrain find ACTUALLY works. Is it only a kinda duplicate? Doesn't it actually look in the existing found set for duplicates or in all records? I would sure like to see a detailed instructions on the use thereof as it seems like a guessing game!

The ! operator Finds all records where the field with the ! operator has a duplicate value in the table, not in the found set. Thus when you constrain a found set, any records in the found set that are unique over all the records in the table are omitted from the found set.

Say you have these records in the table:

               DD
               Apple
               Apple
               Kiwi
               Banana
               Kiwi
               Banana

and then you produce this found set:

               DD
               Apple
               Apple
               Kiwi
               Banana

If you return to find mode, put an ! in this field and constrain the found set you get:

               Apple
               Apple
               Kiwi
               Banana

DD is omitted because no other record in the table has that value. Kiwi and Banana are not omitted because they have duplicate values in the table--even though the duplicates are not found in the current found set.
