Presumably it send from the default account. If that is the case, would it be inconvenient to set the 'newsletter' account to be the default?
Actually there is no default account. At least not as I can see. I have 2 accounts, and I can choose any of them from the email I have open. But there is no way to set a "default" accunt.
I have now tried the "send via SMTP" script step in stead of send via email client.
There I can type in the senders email addres / reply addres, which solves that problem. I am doing some testing now. In the beginning it worked well, but now and then I get en error message that the mail could not be sent. Without any explanation.
This is spooky, because I risk that none of my subscribers are getting their emails, and I have no control over what is happening.
By using a mail client, I get a reciept in the way of messages in the "sent" box. How can I get a verification of mail sent when I send via SMPT?
I'm only surprised that you got SMTP to work at all. The forum has quite a number of posts saying that it can't handle, spaces in names, this, that, the other. If you search for 'smtp' you'll find plenty - I think you'll just have to work your way through the problems they have. Note that FM Help points out that if there is an error in sending mail no recipients after the error will be sent a mail.
I have the same set up with 2 email accounts and will use FMP to email out of both of them depending what I need. I've never seen it defined in a script (would be super handy) the work around to make it work in your set up is this. Go into mail and literally click on the inbox of the account you want to use (ie newsletters). click back into filemaker pro with send via email client selected and run your script and it will drop them all into mail going from what ever account is highlighted in the inbox part. I usually turn off the wireless simply so that the messages go in the outbox first and I can double check I clicked the right account as i've had the wrong one clicked a few times. Then put the wireless on again and let it blast out the messages.
Thank you Owen, clicking the right account under the inbox is a great workaround. I notice the procedure of turning of airport as well.
And thanks Sorbsbuster. I wish the SMTP function would work properly. Indeed a better solution than the email client.
I have a pure email field that is feeding the output (no names or spaces), so that might be the reason that sometimes works.
Hopefully the developers are working this through.
You wrote, "Actually there is no default account. At least not as I can see..."
There is a "default account" setting. Look in the Preferences/Composing/
There is a choice for "Send new messages from:" Select from the menu.
I think a lot of the problems of unreliability I experienced before were, in fairness to Filemaker, associated with the particular Service Provider for the customer(s) at the time. After a recent problem of e-mails sending/not sending through a customer's e-mail provider's server settings, I gave up in frustration and set them up with a Gmail account (which, basically, no-one else uses or needs to be aware of) dedicated to being their 'Filemaker E-mail Service Provider'. It works perfectly and reliably. If the 'real' user wants to have a copy in their sent items then you could cc them and set a rule in their mail client to file that mail straight to the appropriate folder. (And that solution also satisfied the customer's requirements that they wanted the Filemaker solution to send alert e-mails, but they did not want the users at that workstation to have e-mail access, so no e-mail client is installed.)
Unless I can think of a reason not to in a particular circumstance, in the future I think I just go straight to the gmail solution.
