11 digit number only displays as "1.0038e+10"
I would like to display a 11 digit number in the following format: "10037888914".
For some reason Filemaker will only display the number as "1.0038e+10".
Could anybody please help?
From the inspector change the field format under Data Formatting to "As entered".
Thank you very much! :)
One more question...
It worked perfectly in the Form View, but if I go back to the Table View the Format hasn't changed. Could you please let me know how I can also change that number?
stupid question but possible answer...are you sure the field is wide enough?
Yes, it is. That was my first thought too...
If you specify General you will get the scientific notation for numbers over 10 digits. My testing with 12 and 13 the formatting carried over to table view. A field with "As Enter Formatting" will wrap the text if the field is not wide enough, so I would guess that the formatting is not set to "As Enter". Every field has formatting, you will have to change it for every number field.
Is your table view of the same layout as where you previously made the same formatting changes? To format a specific field for table view, you add the field somewhere on your layout while in layout mode, specify the data formatting and then table view will correctly display that field as a column but with the specified formatting.
Somewhere early in my use of Filemaker Pro, version 3 or 4, I read that unless one is doing math on a field of numbers, format it as text. Since then I have done so. Has always worked for me.

Not a bad idea, though there can be exceptions to that. For example, if you want to sort on a field of numbers in a text field, they won't sort correctly in many cases.
If I am possibly going to sort a number-text field, I zero pad it to a certain number of digits. Certain numbers need to have a leading zero so text is necessary, i.e. social security numbers, drivers license number, zip codes.
Which works for integers but not floating point values (3.14...), but it's simpler just to use a number field for numbers in the first place.
My practice is to put all fields that contain only numeric data in a field of type number. If any nonumeric text needs to be added, make it text. Overall, I've found that's simpler and this forum is littered with posts by people that didn't get the results that they expected in a sort or calculation because they did not have their numeric data in a field of type number.
And yes, I use a text field for leading zero numbers.
By changing the number to a text format it displayed it the way I was hoping it would!
Thank all of you for your help!! :)
