And what problems do you encounter when you try to set this up?
What you have looks like the correct expression for computing the value of your DailyCost field. This could be a field of type calculation or a number field with an auto-enter calculation so long as you clear the "do not replace existing value" check box and do not expect adding or changing the calculation to automatically update existing records.
the problems are that unless I populate the over-ride the calculation will not work. as soon as i put a number in the over-ride field the cal populates and if i erase the over-ride amount the cal remains as is without any over-ride?????
I used auto enter the zero as well as auto cal and the following programming:If( HrsOvr > 0; HrsOvr*costperhour;numhrs*costperhour)
Is this a field specified as type calculation or a number field with an auto-enter calculation?
If auto-enter, did you clear or select the option: "do not replace existing value"?
the field is numeric with an auto-enter calculation and the field "do not ..." has been cleared
I would make this a field of type calculation instead. But what you have defined should work. See the example records in my test file where I have set this up exactly as you have described.
But adding or changing an auto-enter calculation will not change the value shown in DailyCost for existing records. You'd need to force them to update if this is what you need. See this thread for details on that process: Updating values in auto-enter calc fields without using Replace Field Contents
