Permanently? Or dynamically, depending on the found set and sort order?
Just long enough to use the result as a means to find all A's and assign them a specific value in another field, and then search for the B's and then the C's . I could use 1,2,3 instead. Just basically looking for a way to assign every third record to a specific group with doing thousands one at a time.

Well, if you mean to use it in a find, then it has to be 'permanent' - i.e. it must be stored in a field, not calculated on-the-fly.
Define a new Number field for this purpose. Find the records you want to renumber and sort them in the desired order. Click in the new field and select Records > Replace Field Contents… > Replace with calculated result =
Mod ( Get (RecordNumber) - 1 ; 3 ) + 1
You can script this if you need it often.
