Right Click the "other field" while in Browse Mode and select conditional format.
Click New and select the "formula" option.
Enter a conditional format expression such as:
YourTable::FirstFIeld = "Strawberry"
And select the red fill color.
Click New again and and a second expression:
YourTable::FirstFIeld = "banana"
And select a yellow fill color.
This will not work with Instant Web Publishing--there's a more complex method that can be used for web published layouts.
Okay, I think I need to clarify the second field in my database. In the second field I'd like the word "Red" to show if in the first field the word "strawberry" is selected. When I looked at the Conditional format field I didn't see this option. Any other hints?
Sorry for misreading your original post.
Define field 2 as a calculation field:
Case ( Field1 = "Strawberry" ; "red" ;
Field1 = "Banana" ; "Yellow" )
You can also put the colors in a related table and replace field 2 with a field from the related table. This can make it much easier to update the values in field 1 that need to match to different color text for field 2.
Oh, no worries, I wasn't as clear as I should have been. I will try the calculation first. Hopefully that will work, if not I'll try related table route. Thanks again for your help.
Both will work, but the second option allows you to let your users update the list of matching names/colors without having to redefine a calculation field in order to do so.
Yay, it worked! Am doing the Happy Dance now...... I used the "Calculation" field as I'm the only one who will be changing anything about the database and for this case there won't be any changes in the future. Thank you for your help with this. You made my day a happy one.
I am trying to do the same thing I have a Word Form and the first 2 lines are Color Number and Color Name I am wanting when I enter the 4 digit color number that word automatically fills out the color name. I already have a Word Table with 2 rows ( Row 1 is Color Numbers and Row 2 is Color Names ) how can I link this table in to the Word Form. Thank you in Advanced. @
What you describe is not at all the same thing unless I am misunderstanding you. This thread is about setting a fill color and you are describing displaying a color name when the color number is selected.
Assuming that your "word form" is a separate table, you need a relationship linking that color number field to a color number field in your layout's table. Do you have that? If you do, you can simply add the color name field from the related "word form" table to your layout. It could also be setup as a "look up" or "auto-enter" calculation where this text is copied from the related record.
Julieford, corrected herself saying:
"Okay, I think I need to clarify the second field in my database. In the second field I'd like the word "Red" to show if in the first field the word "strawberry" is selected. When I looked at the Conditional format field I didn't see this option. Any other hints?"
She wanted the Word "Red" to show when "strawberry" was selected.
I want for example the name "Black Star" to show when Number "656" is selected.
I do believe it is the same thing?
Which is the simplest way to do this ?
Yes my Form and Table are separate Word Files.
And I am using Word 2016
No, she wanted the field to change color rather than having another field display text for the color name. Conditional formatting is not used to look up or otherwise reference data from another table, it conditionally changes the appearance of a layout object by changing text style, text color or fill color.
My previous answer assumed what you are now "clarifying" and thus my previous answer describes one way to do what you describe.

This is a forum for FileMaker .
Why are you talking about Word 2016?
haha I didn't even realize FileMaker was a program I thought it was called that because you guys helped people make their files lol my mistake.
Ok if you could please give me a little more step by step I'd really appreciate it.
Do you have a copy of FileMaker Pro or FileMaker Pro Advanced?
Without that, my advice will be of no use to you.
