Auto-complete text fields by selecting one in a drop down menu

      Post

      Hi!

I'm new to FileMaker and I really need help!

I've this layout where I insert the data I need:

      Insert_data

Now, from another layout, by selecting the field 'articolo' from a drop down list, the relative fields 'descrizione', 'cliente' and the others signed with a red square have to be auto-completed with the data i've insert in the other layout...

      recall_article

Sorry for the english, i'm italian!

      Hope that someone could help!

      Thanks.

          Hi Mirko

It isn't clear how many tables you have now; they seem two layout of the same table.

( Non è chiaro se tu abbia una o più tabelle )

Can you give more information on your graph of relationships ?

( Puoi fornire ulteriori informazioni sulle eventuali relazioni ? )

If the field "articolo" is the primary key you do not need another field to make the relationship; this must be:

Codici :: codice articolo <---> Rilievi :: codice articolo

Yo can put in the Rilievi layout directly the other fields of the Codici table or, if you wish, the fields of the Rilievi table formatted with the option to autoenter a Lookup value.

              ------------

Se per articolo intendi "codice articolo" e comunque questo è sicuramente unico, la relazione deve essere fatta solo da questo campo e cioè:

Codici :: codice articolo <---> Rilievi :: codice articolo

                Ti ringrazio molto.

                Ciao e buona giornata.

                  Hey guys,

I found this post because I *think* it's what I'm looking to do but got "lost in translation"

I basically would like my (for example) address field to auto populate when I select a specific location field.

Ex. Location = "Sears Tower", Address field auto populates to "233 S Wacker Dr # 3530, Chicago, IL"

                  Thanks!

                    Thank you for your post.

In one table (LOCATIONS), have all of your locations and addresses.

Create a second table (MAIN) that contains a location field, and then define the relationship between the two tables (MAIN and LOCATIONS) based upon the location field.

If in the MAIN table, you are only going to be using fixed locations, then include the Address, City, State, and Zip fields from the LOCATIONS table.  If you are going to be adding additional addresses that do not occur in the LOCATIONS table, and you don't want them to appear in the LOCATIONS table, then create addition Address, City, State and Zip fields in the MAIN table.  When clicking on Options for each of those fields, select the tab "Auto-enter", check the option "Looked-up value", and copy the value from the field in the LOCATIONS table.

For example, if you entered the location as "Sears Tower", the Address, City, State and Zip fields will fill in automatically from the values in the LOCATIONS table.  However, if you enter the location as "Joe's house", nothing would be looked up, and you can enter the Address, City, State and Zip fields manually.

If you need clarification for any of the above steps, please let me know.

Sounds great! Haven't used relational tables yet but will do so tonight!

You specified how to manually add Address, City, State, and Zip fields which will be added to the (MAIN) table and not the (LOCATIONS) table. But how do I manually add them so they DO show up in the (LOCATIONS) table? Or is that the default?

Meaning, there is a new location that is not listed in the Locations table and is therefore not in the drop box. I manually enter it in (with Address, City, State, and Zip fields as well). The next time I check the location field, the new added one is there and will auto populate the Address, City, State, and Zip fields.

                      Thanks!

                        enyko:

You can add the information to the LOCATIONS table via a portal.  The Portal tool allows you to view information from another table, and it gives you the ability to add information based upon the "key" field (in this case, the location).  When you set the link between the two tables (under the Relationships tab in Manage -> Database...), there is an icon on the line that links the two tables.  Double-click that icon and the "Edit Relationship" dialog box appears.  One side has the LOCATIONS information and the other side has the MAIN information.  On the LOCATIONS side, in the lower half, put a check mark in the option "Allow creation of records in this table via this relationship".  This is the key (no pun intended) to adding records to a related table.
