First of all, since its a flat file with what I assume to be no related records, it should be straight forward.
Place the serial field on a layout and use the replace field contents option.
This is found under the Records Menu
Choose Replace with Serial Numbers and leave 'update serial number in Entry Options' checked
This will populate that field with an incremented serial and also adjust the auto enter option to continue from where it left off for new records.
That was too easy. It worked perfectly. Thank you! Jd
I have a follow-up question, please.
I deleted all the records in my database, and am entering the data all over again, from scratch.
When I entered the first new record, the Auto serial number feature began with 46.
Is it possible to reset the Auto-Enter feature so that when I delete all records, it starts with 1?
Also: Is it possible to reset the auto-enter feature at any point in time, so that the numbers are in consecutive order, in the event I delete records and enter new ones?
I’m sure this is a commonly-asked question, but as of right now, I haven’t found the answer. Thanks for your help! Jd
Script the process ...
Show All Records
Delete All Records [ no dialog ]
Set Next Serial Value [ your serial field ; 1 ]
... btw, simply resetting the serial for existing records was described by SWS above: "Choose Replace with Serial Numbers and leave 'update serial number in Entry Options' checked"
You can reset the serial there - be sure the checkbox is checked by change the serial value to 1.
Never mind, I figured out what to do.
I need to add serial numbers to existing records (trying to link tables) but the "Replace with Serial Numbers" option is grayed out under "Records" - what should I do? I have more than 1500 records so it would be a pain to add these numbers manually. :-( Please help!
Never mind - I was dumb...
