Hi, (me) !
After a bit of milling about, I discovered the answer: you can't. I've discovered 'repeating fields', the only option for a 'non-fixed' layout (WHY didn't FMP make the calculations it does here accessible to other objects?!). I'd already finished a 'portal-based' layout (inserting 'fillers' for all-day events extending from the previous day, etc.) that I now have to trash... and programming this one is going to be a PITA.
If anyone has ever heard of another solution, please do tell, but I have not seen even a whiff of one thus far.
Best, take care,
PS: Good luck dealing with all that (North?) Korean spam... sorry to see that they got in ; (
Update: FMCalendar is using HTML (through a portal to itself) for its calendar display; figured that out by watching variables in the variable monitor ; P
Kind of a forehead-slapper, actually: none of the behaviour around adding records, etc, corresponded to FMP layout... 'rules'.
That's kind of genius, actually (standing, applauding madly ; )
Correct auto-sizing of grouped objects was one of many items that I've requested via their Feature Request Form ( See: http://www.filemaker.com/company/contact/feature_request.html )
I even pointed out that they already have the correct code for this as you can resize a group of objects while in layout mode so they just need to apply that math to the auto-size anchors.
You can see the full list that I requested at: http://forums.filemaker.com/posts/56b3613440
Yep, thanks! I tried everything: grouping and resetting autosizing (but this does nothing... group only seems to be useful for positioning in preview/slide up mode), as everything within the group retains their original positioning settings...
And the positioning code is already there. Frustrating.
After six months of development, I may have a list of my own... but thanks for putting a word in, PhilModJunk.
I'm actually going to go the HTML way... I had begun the idea of integrating a calendar in a 'timeline' format (continually scrolling horizontally to display many overlapping day-long events - rentals), and 'bit the bullet' to try a 'classic' calendar for for that... and I can't even do that. How can calendars not be possible in an application dedicated to data organisation/projection?
I would reccomend the "HTML portal way" to anyone else seeking to integrate a calendar into FMP, too: there's just too many limitations and roadblocks. Unless something has changed in version 14 (I'm developing in 13)...
Actually you can get a pretty effective and simple calendar going with just a list view layour with 7 portals in the body, but only if you don't need the "elastic layout" feature that we are unable to produce here without using one of these other methods.
Unfortunately, the 'elastic layout' is one of the key requirements for this calendar: this accounting program (may) be displayed on large touchscreen displays (of various sizes) for adding and editing rental events.
