barcode reader with Filemaker pro
Can anyone recommend a usb barcode reader which can scan and input an ISBN into a field in Filemaker Pro?
Is a plug-in necessary?
Almost any barcode reader will do. The key detail is whether or not it runs in "keyboard emulation mode" and almost all do. In this mode, scanned data is entered into the computer just as though the world's fastest typist entered the scanned data. You can simply connect the scanner, put the cursor in a field of your database and scan a barcode to see the data appear in the field.
The other useful feature is if you can configure the scanner to put characters at the beginning and end of the scanned data. These extra characters can trip script triggers to automate the scan process. OnLayoutKeystroke can detect a "leading" character and perform a script that puts the cursor in the correct field to receive the scanned data. Put a tab, enter or return character on the end of the scan, and this character can cause the cursor to exit the field tripping the OnObjectExit or OnObjectSave triggers to perform a script to process the scanned data.

That's great to know. By the way, did you get a chance to look at my database yet?
I emailed you the login details.

Does this work with IWP?
You can scan data into a field, but you can't directly trip any script triggers in IWP.
Can you use a USB scales to weigh stuff and enter the weight directly into the field?
Working with a scrap metal dealer, I've looked into that. A scale needs extra handling to get an accurate reading. (Code usually has to read the scale several times until it gets the same or nearly the same value each time to confirm an accurate read.) Last time I checked, I could find a plug in from Troi that would allow you to read the data from a USB port, but it was pretty expensive to purchase.
