Best way round my value lists issues

      Post

           Hi there,

I am currently building a database to work with out customer logging and support logging. In this database we have the customer information and the machine information. As we are an Apple Specialist company we only deal with apple products.

I would like to select the product type (i.e. macbook, iMac, iPad etc)

then have a selection of AppleCare Name (i.e. 15in macbook pro late 2011, 13in macbook air late 2009)

once the model has been selected i would like to select the processor speed

Then once the processor speed has been selected i would like the other fields to automatically populate based on the record found in my "Devices List Table"

i have uploaded a few images for you to see what i am on about. I have been struggling with this for a while now.

           Thanks

           David

What you describe is something that I call 'hierarchical conditional value lists". Here are my links on the topic of conditional value lists and the last one refers to setting up a chain of hierarchical conditional value lists.

There's a lot of overlap between the first two links so you can read one and skim the other. The demo file gives you several examples of different conditional value lists so you can examine them to see how they are set up. If you are using FileMaker 12, you can open this demo file from your File menu to get a converted copy of the demo file that you can examine in FileMaker 12.

The last link discusses how to set up a chain of conditional value lists where the value selected in each conditional value list controls the values listed in the next value list.

                   Thanks Phil,

I have managed to get the Device list populated and the applecare name populated based on the device list. GREAT

but the processor (based on the selection of both the device and applecare name) does not work

Neither does the model (based on the selection of both the device and applecare name).

Also how would i go about making the ASD field, EMC field & screen size field auto populate based on the answer without having to drop down to choose (as there should only be one option).

Attached is another photo of the relationships i have and the value list setup so far.

Thanks for the help and sorry for the dumb questions

                   David

but the processor (based on the selection of both the device and applecare name) does not work

Does that mean that you have to select both a device and an applecare name before you can get a list of processors?

If so, you need to use both fields as match fields in the relationship set up for your conditional value list.

See this thread for how to get the rest of the data to appear. Note that there are two different approaches that are the "best method" in different situations. You'll need to decide for yourself which option best fits the needs of how you will use this data.

                  Auto Fill

PS. the list of value list names that you posted provides very limited information about the value lists so defined. The dialog that you can open by selecting one of these value lists and clicking Edit, on the other hand, can be very helpful in figuring out why it isn't working.

PS #2. What software and hardware are you using to post to the forum? Is the software up to date? I haven't seen posts like yours with the lists of extra "junk" in a while and had assumed that software updates to either the forum software or the particular browser had corrected that issue. I'd like to follow up with the Forum Moderator if necessary.

I am using Mac os X Mavericks and Safari to post in here. I cannot see any "Extra Junk" though.

I thought that this was from Safari the last time that It started showing in the forum. Assuming that your version of Safari is up to date, I'll pass this info on to ModMan so that he can look into it.

                             Hi Phil,

Thanks for your reply. I have everything up to date on my browser so I'm not sure what is going on there. on another note your previous comment helped greatly. I found that my relationships were in fact the wrong way round and this might be why it was not working. thanks you for your help this was great!
