Did you by any chance import your contacts into the database?
Yes, the database has contacts and in the above cases I picked contact names from the pick lists and nothing happened.
If you import the contacts from an excel file or other external file, you must enable auto-enter options (a check box in the last dialog you get before importing the data starts), or the imported contacts will not be assigned contactID numbers. Without a contact ID number, the contact records can't be linked to related records in other tables and this may be what has happened here.
If so, you can either make a cloned copy of your data base (no records) and re-import with this option enabled or you can place this field (I'm guessing it's ContactID in your case) and use Replace Field Contents from the Records Menu to load it with serial numbers.
