Probably not--a more detailed explanation of what you want to do would be helpful. Usually this type of thing is done with a table of values from which conditional value lists display different lists of values as determined by a value selected in another value list formatted field.
Example: You select "Fruit" in field A, you get Apple; Orange ; Pear in the value list for Field B. You select "Vegetable" and you get carrot; celery ; cabbage...
If that's what you need to do, let me know and I'll share my library of links, tutorials and demo files on the subject.
Yes, that's what I want to do and I've seen examples of conditional lists. It just seems like there would be and easier way like reassigning a different value list id to the field. But if not then share with me what you've got, I would appreciate it and thanks for the response.

There's a lot of overlap between the first two links so you can read one and skim the other. The demo file gives you several examples of different conditional value lists so you can examine them to see how they are set up. If you are using FileMaker 12 or later, you can open this demo file from your File menu to get a converted copy of the demo file that you can examine in your version of FileMaker.
The last link discusses how to set up a chain of conditional value lists where the value selected in each conditional value list controls the values listed in the next value list.
