Can I share FileMaker over the Internet without Server?

      Post

Hi everyone.  I have 3 FileMaker users in total Pro 13.  In our office we have one computer that just runs FileMaker and shares it with the rest of us as we don't need Server it's expensive and overkill and I don't like how the databases work in a browser anyway as half my images don't work.  One of my users works from home often, so right now they have to VPN in on their iPad to use FileMaker Go or their laptop.  I'd prefer to move FileMaker to a VPS and host it in the cloud vs in my office on an old desktop.  Am I able to open certain ports so that users can access the shared database over the Internet by Static IP directly vs needing VPN?  Thanks!

I don't think anyone would recommend that at all.  'Expensive'& 'Overkill' only apply if you don't value your data, and the security and backup provided by Server.  You could set up the peer-to-peer network with I think up to 5 users (FM12), but once again you lose the benefits of security and scheduled backups.

You could pose this question here http://fmforums.com/forum/forum/25-security-concepts/.  There is a FM security expert who frequents this thread as well as others who could give you a better explanation and reasons.

I completely concur with Steve Martino here....I would just add most of our clients are happy to use specialist Filemaker hosting companies on a "shared server".secure but cost effective.  Not sure where you are based but we and they use Rapidhost (awesome customer support) in the UK and Oditech in the States (no affiliation we just like the service).  There are many others...Monthly costs from various companies like this worldwide can range from $12 -$50 typically, more depending on your exact needs.

They provide high speed servers, great backup architecture and Filemaker Server  not needed to be purchased......

Thanks I didn't realize some were that cheap, just found one in the US here $12 for one file up to 2GB and then $8 for each concurrent WebDirect or Go user, which is totally reasonable.  I had checked before but must have been looking at the wrong site or plans as I remember seeing them like $150 a month etc, so prob way more high end.  Security and backup isn't as huge for me since it's a small database, and saved in my Google Drive so already does constant backup, and there's nothing that needs to be secure on there it's just timetables and things that would mean nothing to someone else, so having my own server open to the Internet is really not an issue for me.  However if I'm reading this right and this pricing is correct, then it's totally not worth doing it myself!

No problem, we see the issue you face many many times, and this solution tends to work out great for most small businesses.

The high prices are associated normally with a dedicated server for you and you only,  We have one of these, justified as we are developers.  Shared servers are split between customers (securely)..but then of course bring the price down.  The downside is that they may be a little slower than a dedicated one at times as there are other users apart from you on it, This however has never really caused our clients a problem.

Understood you are not worried about security, however they are secure and its great to open your file from anywhere in the world without hassle. It really is not worth doing it yourself.....BTW some offer a months free trial, if so take it up to test the performance for yourself....some dont advertise it but will give it if you ask...

Thank you!  Yeah I noticed they have a trial so that's pretty good.  I mean I was paying $15 for Salesforce group edition, which was more like $21 after US exchange rate and taxes.  So even at these rates it's still affordable, especially since FM does 100x more than Salesforce did anyway. :)

                      Hey everyone,

Just wanted to ask a quick question.  Is it normal that WebDirect is pretty slow?  Like not so much slow, just more I don't know how to describe it actually.  Like it almost feels like I'm accessing FileMaker the program but through some browser plugin as remote desktop or something.  Like if I click a drop down menu, it doesn't do anything for a good 1 second or so then it appears.  If I'm in a text field and I press tab, again it's a good second or so before it switches to the next tab.  It's not slow slow in terms of searching etc, like the desktop app is faster of course, but it's more that it just doesn't feel like a normal website, like using Salesforce for example.  Maybe I should try to upload a sample database like FMStartingPoint or something to see how it responds, but it seems like it was doing something similar when even running the server trial on my own computer.

It works it's just weird, not sure how to describe it, it's really like using remote desktop or something where there's just slight lag etc.  It's not awful but just enough that you can't work too fast, you have to keep slowing down to wait for the cursor to move into the next field etc.  In the FM Pro app I can hit tab tab tab super fast and switch fields quick but that's not possible.

Just to add, like I have pop up fields, or drop downs whatever they are called, where you click and it drops down a list of options.  I click it, nothing happens, click it again nothing happens, clicked it a 3rd time and it opened right up.  So it also does that, click and nothing happens sometimes.

Depends on if the server is powerful enough, network connections robust enough, etc.  This is why we only currently support WebDirect on our virtual dedicated servers, to conform to FileMaker's hardware recommendations.
