You can freeze the screen, go to the layout, do the find, go back to original screen and refresh screen.
You can also open a window with a location in the negatives so that it is not visible and perform your find in that hidden window.
In most cases, though, I'd use DavidAnders' method.
But the key question is what do you intend to do with that find once you have found the records? Since you want to hide it from view, just finding records does nothing unless your then plan on doing something with that found set.
I want an installontimer script to perform the find, determine which records haven't printed and then print the records accordingly. I hate to use the installontimer but I haven't seen anything that could asynchronously trigger the printing - these records for printing are generated from iPad using Go PDFd and stored in a table in the application - therefore I wanted to 'sweep' any records not yet printed...
