Check the field you have formatted as a drop down list.
Is it from the correct table?
Does it have global storage specified in field options?
These are the two most likely things that could be causing this problem.
You might also have a script trigger performing a script that is using replace field contents or a similar process to modify all the records in your table--though this is a less likely scenario here.
Phil, thanks for your answer. it is none of the first two options. it is the correct table and no global value.
My apologies in advance for this, but let's be sure that it's the correct field from the correct table.
In layout setup, what do you see in Show Records From?
If you select the field while in layout mode, what do you see in "Display Data From", in the Inspector's Data tab?
If the text to the left of the :: in "display data from" is not exactly the same as the text in Show Records From, then you might have a problem here and we'd need to look at the relationship between the table occurrence listed in Layout setup | show records from and the table occurrence identified in "Display Data From" in the inspector for this field.
To check for a script trigger, right click the field and select the Script Trigger's option and see if any are selected for it. You should also check the triggers for the layout in Layout Setup... as an OnRecordCommit trigger might also perform a script that changes values in the fields of your other records.
If this drop down is inside a portal, a trigger set on the portal might also be a factor.
Sorry, for being stupid but I don't find a Show records from or Display data from nor an inspector's tab. where are those? thanks again for your patience
What version of FileMaker are you using?
It sounds like you might be using an older version. The interface and capabilities of older systems vary quite a lot so it helps us to help you if you let us know what version we are using.
I am using FileMaker Pro 10.0v1
The inspector is a new feature in FileMaker 11.
Enter Layout Mode and select Layout Setup... from the layouts menu. This will open up the Layout Setup... dialog where you'll find the Show Records From dialog.
While still in layout mode, double click the field and the Field/Control Setup dialog will appear. You'll find the display data from drop down at top right in this dialog box.
BTW, if you click the downloads link at the top of this screen, you should be able to find a free updater you can use to update to 10.0v3.
Thank you very much, Phil. this was the problem!!
